City Park, City Park West, and Whittier Neighborhoods

CITY PARK

City Park is an urban park and neighborhood in Denver, Colorado. The park is 330 acres (1.3 km2) and is located in east-central Denver. The park contains the Denver Zoo, the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, Ferril and Duck Lakes, and a boathouse. City Park is also the name of the neighborhood that contains the park, though the park is the vast majority of the neighborhood. To the immediate north of the park is the City Park Golf Course. City Park is the largest park in Denver.
The entirety of the City Park neighborhood is only two blocks wide, but about a mile long. The area in the southwest corner of the neighborhood consists of East High School and a green area called the City Park Esplanade, which in some ways extends the park south two blocks to Colfax Avenue.
Colfax in the City Park neighborhood in particular, has become a popular area with many trendy restaurants, stores, and other businesses, including the newest location of the Tattered Cover bookstore and Twist & Shout record store, just across from the neighborhood. The neighborhood has also seen new residential and commercial developments, including the twin towers of the Pinnacle at the former site of Mercy Hospital.

 CITY PARK WEST

City Park West is a neighborhood of mostly single-family homes, small apartment buildings, and one very large hospital complex. The center of the district features the medical facilities of Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Hospital, Exempla St. Joseph’s Hospital, and a number of other medical office buildings and related facilities.
Like many of Denver’s Center City districts, City Park West is experiencing a number of smaller, multi-family infill projects on vacant or underutilized lots in among the mature landscape and classic early-20th century homes for which the district is known. Also, the stretch of East Colfax along City Park West’s southern boundary is showing evidence of new vitality and investment with great potential for additional infill projects along that important commercial corridor.

WHITTIER NEIGHBORHOOD

Whittier is a neighborhood of Denver, Colorado, located approximately two miles northeast of downtown Denver. The boundaries of the neighborhood are 23rd Avenue to the south, Martin Luther King Boulevard (32nd) to the north, Downing St. to the west and York St. to the east. The neighborhood is mostly residential and old (1890s) by standards of the cities of the American West. Most of the housing stock was built prior to the 1940s.
The neighborhood is named for an elementary school located at 25th Avenue and Downing St. which was named after John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892), an abolitionist poet and a founding member of the American Republican political party.
A combination of proximity to downtown, parks and a public golf course in addition to a housing stock of early twentieth century homes of craftsman architecture at reasonable prices is driving an influx of new homeowners to the Whittier neighborhood.
